Riyan Parag Fined for Slow Over-Rate After Rajasthan Royals’ IPL 2025 Win Against Chennai Super Kings

Riyan Parag

Riyan Parag, the stand-in captain of Rajasthan Royals, breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday after his team secured their first win of IPL 2025, defeating Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling encounter in Guwahati. Following two losses to Sunrisers Hyderabad and defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan’s victory came as a much-needed boost. However, during the match, the Royals breached an IPL rule concerning the over-rate, leading to Parag being slapped with a hefty fine.

The BCCI fined Parag INR 12 lakhs on Monday after Rajasthan Royals were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate in their match against Chennai at the Barsapara Stadium. This was the team’s first offence of the season, resulting in a fine as per Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations.

Parag now joins Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya as the second captain to be fined for slow over-rates. Pandya incurred a similar fine after Mumbai’s 36-run defeat against Gujarat Titans on Saturday. Pandya had previously served a one-match ban after multiple breaches of the Code of Conduct in IPL 2024. However, the BCCI confirmed that captains will no longer face bans for slow over-rates in IPL 2025. Instead, they will be penalized with demerit points depending on the severity of the violation.

Rajasthan beat CSK

Sri Lanka wrist-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga proved to be the difference-maker, taking 4 wickets for 35 runs, as he exposed Chennai Super Kings’ spin struggles during their chase. Sandeep Sharma then defended 20 runs in the final over, including the crucial dismissal of MS Dhoni, ensuring CSK faltered in the chase. Earlier in the match, Nitish Rana starred with a crucial half-century, guiding Rajasthan Royals to a competitive total, which their bowlers successfully defended.

Rajasthan Royals will now take on Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh in their next IPL 2025 fixture.
