Shreyas Iyer Left Out of KKR’s Third IPL Title Anniversary, Responds by Leading PBKS to Qualifier 1

KKR ignited an online controversy by omitting former captain Shreyas Iyer in their social media post celebrating the anniversary of their third IPL title.

Shreyas Iyer and KKR: A Tale of Leadership, Loyalty, and Legacy

Shreyas Iyer and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) present a unique story. Despite leading KKR to their first IPL title in a decade last year, Iyer was released by the franchise ahead of IPL 2025. Punjab Kings swiftly snapped him up for a massive ₹26.75 crore in the mega auction. True to his bold nature, Iyer openly expressed that he felt underappreciated for his title-winning role at KKR.

Much of the spotlight had gone to mentor Gautam Gambhir—now India’s head coach—who was credited by young players for the team’s turnaround.

Fast forward a year, KKR faced early elimination from the IPL playoffs, while Iyer led Punjab Kings to their first playoff appearance in 11 years. This isn’t the first time Iyer has transformed a team’s fortunes; he did it at Delhi Capitals, then KKR, and now continues the trend with PBKS.

As Iyer prepared for his second consecutive IPL captaincy success, KKR stirred controversy with a social media post celebrating the anniversary of their third IPL title. The graphic featured current squad members from their 2024 winning side—but notably excluded Iyer. Fans quickly noticed the omission and expressed their displeasure over the snub of the former captain.

A few hours after guiding Punjab Kings to a top-two finish in the IPL 2025 league stage, Shreyas Iyer praised head coach Ricky Ponting for the freedom and trust he’s been given. PBKS sealed their spot in Qualifier 1 with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians.

“The camaraderie between Ricky and me has grown over the past few years. He gives me the freedom to be decisive on the field, and that has culminated in a great way,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation.

“Every individual stepped up when needed. From game one, our mindset was to win no matter the situation. Players put their hands up even when things looked tough. Kudos to the support staff and management as well.”

Iyer also highlighted Ponting’s player management skills: “Ricky has been fantastic in managing players. It’s important for me to earn their trust, which happened early on with our wins. You have to maintain good relationships throughout. I feel the dressing room has been top-notch all season.”
