Suryakumar Yadav Nearing Full Recovery Ahead of Asia Cup

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, who underwent sports hernia surgery in June in Munich, Germany, is steadily working towards full fitness. After checking in at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, there was speculation about his readiness for the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup. However, according to a Times of India report, the Mumbai Indians batter is yet to achieve complete match fitness and will remain at the NCA for another week to train under the guidance of physios and the medical team.

The Asia Cup begins on September 9, with India facing the UAE in their opening match on September 10. Suryakumar Yadav is expected to recover in time to lead the side in the eight-team tournament.

Last week, the right-hander shared an Instagram video showing his return to training at the NCA, where he was seen running, exercising, and increasing his workload. He also resumed batting practice in the nets. “Can’t wait to be back doing what I love,” Suryakumar captioned the post.

The right-handed batter last featured for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, impressively scoring 717 runs. He finished as the season’s second-highest run-scorer, behind Gujarat Titans’ Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan.

Hardik Pandya checks into NCA

According to the Times of India, premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya has checked into the National Cricket Academy (NCA) ahead of the Asia Cup. He is scheduled to undergo a routine fitness assessment on August 11 and 12. Since mid-July, the Mumbai Indians captain has been training in Mumbai and is expected to play a crucial role in India’s Asia Cup and the upcoming T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka next year.

Shreyas Iyer also completed his fitness assessment at the NCA between July 27 and 29. Despite his outstanding domestic form for Mumbai and leading Punjab Kings to the IPL final earlier this year, Shreyas was overlooked for India’s recent five-match Test series against England.

Although Shreyas has been impressive in domestic cricket, he is not yet guaranteed a spot in India’s T20I squad for the Asia Cup. He hasn’t played a T20I for India since December 2023, and selectors’ decision on rewarding his performances remains awaited.
