Raina Backs Rohit and Kohli as Key to India’s ODI Plans

Since announcing their Test retirements and guiding India to Champions Trophy glory, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been absent from international cricket. Having already stepped away from T20Is, questions are now being raised about their ODI futures as well.
However, former India cricketer Suresh Raina believes both players remain vital to India’s ODI setup, not only for their on-field performances but also for their ability to mentor and guide the next generation of cricketers.
Suresh Raina backs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Speaking to Telecom Asia Sport, Suresh Raina stressed the importance of retaining Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s ODI plans. “Rohit and Virat’s experience is very important. It’s crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit,” he said.
Highlighting their credentials, Raina noted that both have lifted the Champions Trophy and World Cups, while Virat also won the most recent IPL. He believes their leadership experience makes them indispensable in the dressing room. Rohit and Kohli are expected to return for the Australia tour later this year, which includes three ODIs.
Despite their decorated careers, uncertainty looms over Rohit and Kohli’s ODI futures. Both have expressed interest in playing the 2027 World Cup, but BCCI reportedly wants them to participate in domestic cricket during their break from internationals — a requirement they previously declined before retiring from Tests. Until an official announcement is made, their ODI status remains unconfirmed.
