India Clinches Long-Awaited Trophy After Asia Cup Setback, BCCI Celebrates the Victory on a Global Stage

India clinched the Asia Cup but didn’t receive the trophy right after the final. Following their Test series win over West Indies, they were finally presented with a winning trophy.

India Celebrates Another Triumph as Gill Receives Trophy Against West Indies

Asia Cup

India finally held a winning trophy on Tuesday, October 14 — but not for the Asia Cup. While the Men in Blue went unbeaten to clinch their record ninth Asia Cup 2025 title, they had yet to receive the actual trophy, more than two weeks after defeating Pakistan in the final.

In a welcome moment for the team and BCCI, vice-president Rajeev Shukla presented a different trophy to India captain Shubman Gill following the 2-0 Test series win over West Indies at home. The board ensured the celebration received full attention, sharing a 108-second video on its official X handle capturing Gill receiving the trophy and rejoicing with teammates. This marked a rare, tangible trophy moment after India’s previous Asia Cup victory, which had only included an imaginary celebration at the ceremony.

Would BCCI have done that with a bilateral if it wasn’t for the Asia Cup fiasco? Maybe, maybe not.

Why didn’t India get the Asia Cup trophy despite winning the tournament?

The Asia Cup 2025 was overshadowed by Indo-Pak hostilities, with Indian players refusing to shake hands with their arch-rivals and both sides exchanging politically charged gestures throughout the tournament.

ACC and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi further fueled tensions by posting political statements on social media. In protest, the Indian team chose not to accept the trophy. Naqvi, also a current Pakistani government minister, escalated the situation by walking away with the trophy instead of presenting it to India.

The BCCI strongly condemned Naqvi’s actions and announced plans to raise the issue at the upcoming ICC meeting. Speculation is rife that the board could push for Naqvi to be censured—or even removed—from his ICC director role in response to the controversy.

India beat West Indies by 7 wickets to win the series 2-0

India wrapped up a 2-0 series victory against the West Indies with a seven-wicket win in the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Resuming Day 5 at 63-1, India comfortably chased the remaining 58 runs, finishing at 124-3 in 35.2 overs. KL Rahul anchored the innings with an unbeaten 58, supported by Sai Sudharsan’s 39. Roston Chase claimed two wickets on the final day.

Earlier, India declared their first innings at 518-5, powered by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 175 and Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 129. West Indies responded with 248 and were forced to follow on. In their second innings, Shai Hope (123) and John Campbell (115) staged a strong resistance, helping West Indies post 390. Kuldeep Yadav’s eight wickets earned him the Player of the Match award. The victory marked India’s 27th consecutive unbeaten Test against the West Indies and Gill’s first series win as captain.
