The year 2024 proved to be a story of two contrasting halves for the Indian Cricket Team. The Men in Blue kicked off the year with a triumph in the Cape Town Test, followed by a commanding T20I series win over Afghanistan and a dominant 4-1 home Test series victory against England.
India’s crowning achievement of the year came in June when they claimed the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024 title. Their historic campaign was defined by an undefeated nine-match streak, culminating in their title win.
In July, India toured Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, securing impressive T20I series victories with a 4-1 win over Zimbabwe and a clean 3-0 sweep against Sri Lanka.
Australia’s last Test defeat in Sydney occurred during the Ashes series of 2010/11, in January 2011.
Batting first, Australia was dismissed for 280 runs in their first innings, with England’s James Anderson leading the attack, taking 4/66.
In response, Alastair Cook’s remarkable 189, along with centuries from Ian Bell (115) and Matt Prior (118), helped England amass a massive total of 644. Bell and Prior also combined for a crucial 107-run partnership for the sixth wicket, giving England a commanding position.
Faced with a 364-run deficit, Australia was bowled out for 281 in their second innings, allowing England to win by an innings and 83 runs. Cook was named Player of the Match for his outstanding century.
This victory secured the Ashes for England with a 3-1 series win, marking the last time Australia lost the Ashes on home soil.
