Shubman Gill has been named captain of the North Zone team for the Duleep Trophy 2025. Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar praised Gill for making himself available for the Duleep Trophy 2025-26, highlighting that by participating in this domestic tournament, the captain is setting a strong example for his teammates.
Since his appointment as the Test captain, Shubman Gill has consistently led from the front. In his debut series as captain, he showcased his skill and resilience by becoming the highest run-scorer in the series against England.
Despite initial doubts about his captaincy, Shubman Gill silenced critics by thriving in challenging English conditions, amassing 754 runs, including three centuries and a double century.
After the England tour, Shubman Gill continued to demonstrate his commitment by opting to play in the Duleep Trophy, where he will lead the North Zone squad. His leadership is sure to inspire and motivate the younger players in the team.

In his Sportstar column, Gavaskar praised Gill’s choice to play despite having the option to rest, calling it a strong message to his teammates. He also recommended that the fast bowlers from the recent England tour take a break.
“Shubman Gill leading the North Zone side is a huge positive for this tournament. By making himself available, the Indian skipper is setting the right example for the squad. Given the demanding England tour, which packed five Test matches into just over six weeks, it would have been understandable if he had chosen to rest,” Gavaskar wrote.
He added, “It’s wise that the fast bowlers are sitting out, especially after an unusually hot English summer intensified by global warming. Their energy must have been drained after the relentless spells they bowled throughout the series.”
The Duleep Trophy 2025 kicks off on August 28th, returning to its traditional zonal format with four teams competing.
